President Ramos-Horta, “From my hospital bed I give my support to the women of Timor Leste and to all the Timorese people.”

The President of the Republic, DR Jose Ramos-Horta in Darwin Private Hospital - Australia, where is currently receiving treatment, today gave his congratulations and gave his message to the nation, in relation to the International Women’s Day commemoration.

Even though the President is still in the hospital receiving treatment, the Chief of State who is also known as the “President for the Poor” for the people of Timor-Leste shows his responsibility and his thoughts to his people.

For all the mothers and sisters, children of Timor, the Laureate Nobel for Peace said that although he is not in Timor-Leste, but with deep respect he congratulates all the women of Timor.

“ On this day I ask all of the people of Timor Leste, to stop domestic violence; violence against women and children.  I hope for this not only in Timor Leste but all over the world; not only for today but everyday,” said The Head of State


“From my hospital bed I give my support to the women of Timor Leste and to all the Timorese people, to adhere to the Human Rights Conventions, especially the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, which has been ratified by our country. “ “The incidents of 11th of February will not deter me or anybody in Timor to build a Timor based on respect for life and the dignity of the human being” said DR Ramos-Horta.

The President also ask for all the people not to forget the sacrifice that the women of Timor have made during the struggle for freedom, to give value and remember their tears and their suffering. To build a Timor of equal rights for men and women - equality among citizens in the eyes of law.


“On this International Women’s day, I pledge for the people of Timor-Leste, men and women, in Dili and in the Districts, in the city, sucos and villages, in all circumstances, for a life with tranquility that is free from violence in their communities. “
